Horse racing is mourning the shock death of Maple Leaf Mel, the Bill Parcells-owned filly who was euthanized after suffering a catastrophic leg injury just meters from the finish of a $500,000 race at Saratoga Springs on Saturday. The horse was leading the field and looked sure to cross the finish line as the winner, before its leg buckled, unseating jockey Joel Rosario, who was taken to hospital for evaluation and needed stitches for facial abrasions. On-site veterinarians tended to Maple Leaf Mel, but she was euthanized because of the severity of the injury, New York Racing Association said.
