A former U.S. Marine jailed in on fictitious spy charges has demanded to know why his release was not secured in the prisoner swap that freed Trevor Reed.
'Why was I left behind? While I am pleased Trevor is home with his family, I have been held on a fictitious charge of espionage for 40 months,' Paul Whelan said Wednesday in a statement obtained by . 'The world knows this charge was fabricated. Why hasn't more been done to secure my release?'
Whelan, 52, was arrested on espionage charges in December 2018 after being detained at a Moscow hotel. Despite vehemently denying the allegations, the ex-Marine was convicted June 2020 and sentenced to 16 years in prison in a trial that U.S. officials have denounced as 'unfair'.
