A mountain-sized mass of igneous rock lurking 3–12 miles beneath the coast of southern could be acting like a 'magnet' for , a study has warned.The rock, known as the Kumano Pluton, lies within the , a region where the Philippine Sea Plate descends underneath the Japanese edge of the Eurasian plate. While it was first discovered in 2006, until now, its exact scale and impact has remained a mystery.
