Winter is still weeks away, but it's certainly going to feel like winter the next few days as a blast of frigid air moves into New Jersey Tuesday night and Wednesday and a strong coastal storm heads our way on Thursday -- possibly bringing 1 to 3 inches of snow to some parts of the state and a sloppy mix of snow, sleet and rain to other areas.Although some computer guidance models are suggesting the storm could dump as much as 3 to 6 inches of snow or a snow-sleet mix in northern sections of the state, forecasters from the National Weather Service say it's too early to get a firm handle on snowfall projections because many atmospheric factors have to come into play. "It's gonna boil down to the timing of the system and the exact track of the low," said Alex Staarmann, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's regional forecast office in Mount Holly, which covers most of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and part of Maryland. "The faster the system moves in, the more likely it is that more areas will see frozen precipitation, at least initially," Staarmann said. That's because air temperatures will be below freezing Wednesday night, so colder air will remain in place Thursday morning.Blast of frigid airOn Wednesday, temperatures will be stuck in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees across the state, even in South Jersey, before dropping into the mid- to upper 20s overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning - making it feel more like January or February than mid-November.On Thursday afternoon, temperatures are forecast to rise into the mid- to upper 30s in northern sections of the state and low to mid-40s in southern counties. If those projections hold up, accumulating snow will be limited to colder, high-elevation areas.John Kassell@JPKassell Latest ECMWF data continues to suggest a late week significant east coast storm threat. The 850mb level does a remarkable job illustrating warm, Atlantic moisture wrapping into the coastal low. Given temp profiles, interior areas of the NE and NENG could see significant snows9:13 AM - Nov 13, 2018
