Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has slammed the Academy Awards for having no female nominees for Best Director. The Oscars made history in 2021 by having two women nominated in the category, but have none up for the award this year. There have only been seven women nominated for Best Director in the 95-year history of the Oscars - Lina Wertmüller for Seven Beauties (1976), Jane Campion for The Piano (1993), Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation (2003), the first winner Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (2009), Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird (2017), winner Chloe Zhao for Nomadland (2020), Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman (2020) and the most recent winner Jane Campion for The (2021).While the most recent group of nominees seemed to indicate progress was being made, many were disappointed when women were shut out of the category, despite a number of award-season contenders directed by women such as The Woman King (Gina Prince-Bythewood), Woman Talking (Sarah Polley), Charlotte Wells (Aftersun) and She Said (Maria Schrader), many of which are up for other Oscars.
