United States defence chiefs are eyeing Australia as a testing ground for hypersonic and long-range precision weapons under the AUKUS pact.US Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth told the AFP news agency Australia's abundance of large, mostly unpopulated land was a positive for trialling advanced weapons, such as missiles.The AUKUS alliance was set up in 2021 to counter China's assertiveness in the region, with the US and United Kingdom agreeing to provide Australia with the capability to deploy nuclear-powered submarines.
