Rare photos of Titanic show how it adhered to social hierarchy aboard

It was the largest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world whose famous sinking on its maiden voyage spawned scores of books, magazine articles – and an award-winning movie and love story starring Leonardo .

But the 1997 Hollywood version would have nothing on the 1912 real-life tragedy that took more than 1,500 lives and left the grand ship on the ocean floor.

'The enduring appeal of the Titanic's fate is that it should never have happened, and the reasons, and their ramifications, can be endlessly explored,' writes David Ross in this latest account, on March 14.
