Mayor Eric Adams has signed $5,056,744,415 in nearly 200 contracts for migrant services since last year, when he declared a state of emergency, allowing City Hall to bypass a competitive bidding process to address the surge of asylum seekers. While the mayor's office has been slow to give answers about the contracts, a report from the comptroller's office offers insight into how the city has spent the funds, which equal as much as the annual budgets of the Fire, Parks and Sanitation Departments combined.
