A model human embryo with a heartbeat and traces of blood has been created by scientists in a move that could offer insights into the first weeks of life. The synthetic structure was created from human stem cells without the need for eggs, sperm or fertilisation. It replicates some of the cells and structures that would usually appear in the third and fourth weeks of pregnancy, but was designed to never have the ability to develop into a foetus.
