U.S. government scientists have taken an important step in the long journey towards making nuclear fusion - the very process that powers stars and our sun - and a viable energy source for humankind.Researchers at the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in were able to spark a fusion reaction that briefly sustained itself - a major feat because fusion requires such high temperatures and pressures that it easily fizzles out. The ultimate goal, still years away, is to generate power the way the sun generates heat, by pushing hydrogen atoms so close to each other that they combine into helium, which releases torrents of energy.
