Massive amounts of seaweed are washing ashore along the beaches of South which could be carrying pathogens that cause 'leaky gut syndrome'.
Known as sargassum, once it washes ashore it is a nuisance as the thick, brown algae carpets beaches, releasing a pungent smell as it decays and entangling humans and animals who step into it.
For hotels and resorts, clearing the stuff off beaches can amount to a round-the-clock operation.
