The night that his latest epic, Lawrence Of Arabia, was given a Royal Command Performance at the Odeon Leicester Square should have been one of the highlights of David Lean's career.But when the paused in front of him as he walked along the receiving line beforehand and blithely asked: 'Good flick?', Lean was privately enraged.For him, the Duke's use of the word 'flick' typified the British Establishment's disdain for cinema as an art form. His mood wasn't helped by the fact that his own father, a retired accountant in his 80s, also considered the movies trivial and — despite being in good health — sent a message saying he couldn't come because it was too far to travel. He lived barely 30 miles away in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
