Students at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City were sent home Thursday morning after being told a faculty member committed suicide inside the high school Wednesday night.
The man worked in the IT department at the school in Downtown Jersey City, sources said.
Students were called to an assembly and were notified of the death before being dismissed for the day at about 10:15 a.m.
The school did not respond to messages seeking comment, but parents were notified of the death Thursday.
"This morning we suffered the unexpected death of a staff member on campus. We gathered our school community for Mass this morning; we now have counselors and administrators available on campus for students and faculty," Principal James C. DeAngelo wrote in an email to parents.
"Once immediate family members of the deceased have been notified, we will be able to communicate more details," DeAngelo wrote.
A source said the employee was found on the third floor of the school. He graduated from the Catholic high school in 2001.
