A woman was shocked when she woke up after surgery for a herniated disc to find her southern drawl had been replaced with a thick Russian accent.Abby Fender, 39, found her after the procedure that her vocal cords were paralyzed and she no longer spoke as she had for the vast majority of her life. Doctors, initially flummoxed, eventually diagnosed Ms Fender with a rare condition known as Foreign Accent Syndrome. The speech disorder is typically caused by some sort of brain damage due to a traumatic brain injury, stroke, anyeurism, or a central nervous system condition called multiple sclerosis. In some cases, no underlying cause is identified.
