The Gilded Age was a time of great poverty for all but America's most wealthy families - many of whom splashed their dollars on palatial mansions in the still undeveloped streets of . This was the era that made the Astors and the Vanderbilts household names, and saw the uber-rich flocking to Fifth Avenue to build grand homes - some as big as a block wide. Although most of the mansions were demolished in the 1920s - later to be replaced with a Zara, Bergdorf Goodman, and a religious institution - a few still stand in their full glory.
