The Metropolitan Museum of Art is being sued by the heir of a wealthy Jewish couple over a Vincent van Gogh oil painting taken from their possession by Nazis at the beginning of World War II.
Judith Anne Silver has accused the Met as well as the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation of failing to recognize that the painting was stolen and would like the work returned to their possession.
In a lawsuit filed Monday in Federal District Court in Manhattan, Silver also seeks damages 'for taking and detaining it' in excess of $75,000, payment of the painting equivalent to its value, legal fees and punitive damages.
