Using Census data, we analyzed the towns that have the highest monthly median gross rent, which includes the amount paid in rent and estimated average monthly cost of utilities.
In New Jersey, residents spend a median of $1,213 a month on rent, the fifth-highest amount in the nation. Only Maryland, California, the District of Columbia and Hawaii pay more.
Earlier this year, we found the 23 towns where renters paid the highest median gross rents. The list below shows the highest rental market in each of New Jersey's 21 counties:
A note about the data: From the U.S. Census Bureau's 2012-2016 American Community Survey for median gross rents. We only included towns with 40 percent or more and 500 or more renter-occupied housing units.
