New state laws have been enacted that could subject librarians to significant penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines, for providing sexually explicit, obscene or books deemed 'harmful' to children. The laws that have been introduced in at least five states and that are pending in nine others allow for the criminal prosecution of school and library personnel involved in such actions.At least seven states have passed these laws over the past two years, with six of them doing so in the last two months, although the governors of and vetoed similar legislation.
