I caught my first glimpse of backstage from just outside her dressing room in a hotel called the Turning Stone Resort in upstate New York in 2006. I’d arrived early, hoping to surprise the world’s biggest/smallest music star before she had time to trowel on make-up and lashes, pull on a wig and the inevitable rhinestone-studded jumpsuit. No chance. She told me she’d been up since 4am. She only sleeps three or four hours a night and always has her game face on. ‘When I’m home, I usually wear make-up only because I never know who is going to come by, but I don’t want to go around looking like a slouch for my husband either. I work with a lot of stars who come to the studio looking so bad you wouldn’t even know them! I think, “I wouldn’t even look that bad at home!”’
