Women who stopped using oral birth control experienced more mental health issues than they did while taking the contraceptives. Researchers in Austria found young women who ceased taking combined oral contraceptives (COCs) for one month were nearly 25 percent more likely to experience negative mental health consequences. Also known as 'the pill,' COCs contain both estrogen and progestin, two female hormones that impact a woman's menstrual cycle and sexual health.
