LIAR! This word was shouted, over and over, as our car pulled into the side entrance of the Royal Courts of Justice in . The crowd of Johnny Depp fans pushed up against the vehicle, jostling for a glimpse of his ex-wife through the window.

It was the opening morning of what was billed as 'the libel trial of the century'. Depp was suing The Sun newspaper for defamation for calling him a 'wife-beater': he claimed Amber had lied about the she said she had suffered during their relationship. As a human rights barrister, I was representing Amber as she gave evidence in support of the newspaper's case.

We could hear the crowd before we could see them. Bellowing, yelling, booing.
