That familiar ping can mean only one thing. Rather than being slow-cooked in the oven or stirred on the hob, your dinner has been blasted from cold (or worse, frozen) to hot in a matter of minutes… in the microwave.
In culinary circles, it's a dirty word. Such is the snobbery around microwaves that says they're the preserve of 'lazy cooks', while Raymond Blanc compares their use to 'an act of hate'.
Even Mary Berry, who in 1988 devoted an entire book to microwave cooking, now swears she wouldn't use hers for anything except warming up a cup of cold coffee.
