A long-haired bat boy drew the ire of announcer Michael Kay in Cleveland on Monday for failing to adhere to the club's 47-year-old personal grooming policy.
'Strange to see a Yankee uniform, somebody wearing that uniform with that sort of hair,' Kay mused in the seventh inning of Monday's 3-2 loss to the Guardians. 'If the players aren't allowed, I don't know if the bat boy should be allowed.'
The problem for Kay was that the bat boy's long blonde locks and patchy facial hair do not conform to the Yankees' clean-cut aesthetic – a standard that was implemented by late owner George Steinbrenner when he bought the team in 1976.
