The Biden administration moved one step closer to approving a controversial drilling project in that would produce up to 629 million barrels of oil.
The administration indicated it is likely to approve the Willow Project, a major business venture by ConocoPhillips that would lock in oil and gas drilling in Alaska for 30 years.
An environmental impacts review by the Interior Department on Wednesday predicted the project could result in 278 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over the project's 30 years - the equivalent of driving 59,900 cars for a year or firing up 60 new coal-fired power plants.
