China says it has successfully fired an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean, a rare public test that analysts said was meant to send a message to the US and its allies amid heightened regional tensions.
An ICBM carrying a dummy warhead was launched at 8.44am (10.44am AEST) on Wednesday and fell into a designated area in the high seas of the Pacific Ocean, the Chinese Defence Ministry said in a statement.
It did not specify the missile's flight path or landing location.
