The United States, Australia and the United Kingdom are traveling "further down the wrong and dangerous path for their own geopolitical self-interest", China's Foreign Ministry has said in response to the latest AUKUS submarine details.
Australia will spend up to $368 billion by 2055 to build a new fleet of eight nuclear-propelled submarines in Adelaide to enter service in the 2040s under the costliest defence project in the nation's history.
Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the arrangement arises from the "typical Cold War mentality which will only motivate an arms race, damage the international nuclear nonproliferation regime, and harm regional stability and peace".
