A cardiologist who was on humanitarian mission to provide care to victims of the ravaging flood in the Brazilian southern state of Rio Grande do Sul died of a massive heart attack, his mother confirmed on social media.
Dr. Leandro Medice, 41, joined a group of doctors Sunday before dawn and flew from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo to the Rio Grande do Sul city of São Leopoldo to help residents at a shelter.
Dr. Carlos Cardoso, a dermatologist, told Brazilian news outlet that he asked Medice if he was interested in joining the volunteer mission, especially because of the shortage of doctors who were available because of Mother's Day.
