United States President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are expected to talk on Thursday, according to US officials, amid new tensions over Taiwan and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that managing economic competition between the two countries would also be a focus of the call, the fifth between the two leaders.
The latest discussion will take place amid renewed friction over the self-ruled island of Taiwan after China reacted angrily to a possible visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island, which Beijing claims as its own.
