An arrested man was left paralyzed after a police officer bodyslammed him onto a concrete floor while he was handcuffed, before being left in a cell without medical help for 20 hours, a lawsuit has claimed.
Attorneys for 42-year-old Christopher Shaw, who was arrested in June 2021 for public intoxication and held in a Beaumont jail, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city, a police officer, the Jerfferson County Sheriff's office and CorrHealth - the county jail's medical contractor.
The suit claims Beaumont Police Officer James Gillen used excessive force against Shaw, and violated his civil rights. Shaw also alleges that CorrHealth ignored his pleas for medical assistance while he was left on the floor injured.
