Oklahoma executes killer after judge sticks to fast death row schedule

A man convicted of shooting and killing two people in City more than two decades ago was executed Thursday morning as part of the state's aggressive death row schedule.

Michael Dewayne Smith received a lethal injection at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, and was , Oklahoma Department of Corrections said.

The state's first execution of 2024 comes after a judge rejected requests to slow down the timetable of lethal injections, brushing aside concerns of trauma and staff shortages and saying corrections teams needed to 'man up.'
