Outdoor goods firm REI will close its huge downtown store after struggling with record-breaking thefts and burglaries despite splurging on heavy-duty security. In a letter to members on Monday the retailer said it would close the city's downtown store, which has 'had its highest number of break-ins and thefts in two decades'. REI spent $800,000 on additional security in 2022, and said that it does not believe a downtown Portland location will be possible in the near term.
