What you can rent for $1,500 in each county

Whether you buy a home or are renting, it is expensive to live in New Jersey. In fact, there are only six other states in the country where it is more expensive to rent than in the Garden State.

The average cost of a two-bedroom rental in New Jersey is $1,465 compared to the national average of $1,149, according to a recent report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

We have documented what you can buy in real estate in each of New Jersey's 21 counties at various price points, ranging from what you can get throughout the state with $150,000 to $1 million.

Not everyone is in position to buy. But there are similarities. Like buying a home, how far a dollar can go on the rental market drastically differs depending on where you are in New Jersey. A renter in Hudson County may pay about $30 per square foot, but head south to Salem County and it could be less than $10.

Here is what a $1,500-a-month budget can get you on the rental market in each county, ranging from a tiny studio to a home that sits on 3 acres.

Trulia

Atlantic: 99 Cherokee Drive, Galloway

Located in the largest municipality in New Jersey, this town house is one of the bigger properties on this list and is currently renting for $1,500. Described in its listing as a "large unit," the 1,660-square-foot home has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms.

Trulia

According to the listing, the home has new countertops in the kitchen and a large master bedroom and bathroom. There are laminate floors on the first floor and carpet on the second floor.

The home was built in 1990.

Bergen: 100 Central Ave. #2C, Fort Lee

Everyone has their own definition of "large." According to a Bergen County listing, this 500-square-foot unit is a "large" studio, but the size of this apartment is not its selling point. Renting in Bergen or Hudson County is often all about the access into Manhattan. This apartment is close to the George Washington Bridge and pubic transportation options in Fort Lee.

The listing describes the inside of the home as "luxury living at an affordable price." It is hard to imagine living luxuriously within 500 square feet, but the inside and outside of the apartment have been recently renovated, which is a plus.
