Australia could scrap its $368 billion plan to acquire nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS agreement, a respected US research body says.
The federal government could instead redirect the money to alternative projects offering long-range strikepower such as B-21 stealth bombers and missiles, the document from the Congressional Research Service (CRS) argues.
Australia, the US and Britain signed the AUKUS pact three years ago, with the aim of maintaining a "free and open Indo-Pacific", amid growing assertiveness by China in the region.
