Nathan Chen skated his best short programme as the United States made a perfect start in the team event when the figure skating competitions kicked off at the Olympics on Friday.
Chen's first place in the men's short programme was followed by Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue winning the rhythm dance with their season's best to put the US on a maximum 20 points, three ahead of the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) skaters.
Russians Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, the world No 1s, delivered a below-par performance to end up second after the ROC's 18-year-old Mark Kondratiuk took third place in the men's short programme behind 's Shoma Uno.
