A homeless career criminal with a history of more than a dozen arrests was led into a Manhattan courtroom in handcuffs to be arraigned on a hate murder charge for the savage beating of a Chinese immigrant, which left him comatose until his death eight months later.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Thursday announced the new charge of murder in the second degree as a hate crime against Jarrod Powell for the killing of Yao Pan Ma.
Powell, 50, has been accused of knocking Ma, 61, to the ground, stomping on his head a half-dozen times, and kicking him in the face and neck during an unprovoked attack that took place in Harlem on April 23, 2021.
